Juvederm Ultra XC

Juvederm Ultra XC

Hyaluronic acid filler in the original Juvederm Hylacross family, FDA-approved for lip augmentation and perioral correction. Softer and more flexible than Ultra Plus; firmer and more projecting than Volbella. Placed by Dr. Brown.

What it is

Juvederm Ultra XC is a hyaluronic acid (HA) gel in Allergan’s original Hylacross family — distinct from the newer Vycross line that includes Voluma, Vollure, and Volbella. The Hylacross technology produces a smooth, cohesive gel that integrates well into mobile tissue, which is what makes it a workhorse for lip enhancement.

FDA-approved for lip augmentation and the correction of perioral lines. Among the most-used lip fillers in the United States, with results typically lasting up to twelve months.

Ultra is engineered for lip work that needs more body than Volbella but less density than Ultra Plus. The choice between Volbella, Ultra, and Ultra Plus is a clinical one, made by anatomy and goal — not by patient preference for a name.

How Dr. Brown approaches it

Ultra at Esvie is selected when the anatomic target is lip volume with visible projection — fuller lips that still move and feel natural. Patients who arrive wanting a noticeably enhanced lip (rather than a subtle border refresh) are most often Ultra or Ultra Plus candidates.

Dr. Brown evaluates lip anatomy first: native lip height, vermilion border definition, upper-to-lower ratio, the philtral columns, the cupid’s bow, and how the lip sits in the broader perioral context. A lip plan that suits one face will look out of place on another; the goal is balance with the rest of the face, not maximum syringe count.

Typical first treatment uses one syringe — restrained, balanced, evaluated at two weeks before any decision to add more. Patients seeking a fuller result often build over two sessions rather than committing to it all in one visit.

Every syringe is placed by Dr. Brown. The lip contains the labial artery; injection technique matters, and only a physician injector should be in the room.

What to expect

Day of treatment: Topical numbing for ~20 minutes. Ultra XC contains lidocaine for additional comfort during placement. The visit runs 30–45 minutes.

Immediately after: Lips will swell. The post-injection lip is not the final result — it is the post-injection lip. Plan for 3–7 days of swelling that gradually resolves.

Days 3–7: Swelling settles. Bruising, if present, peaks around day 2–3 and fades by day 7–10.

Two weeks: The product integrates into final position. The two-week look is the result you booked for. If a touch-up is needed, it is evaluated at this point — not before.

Aftercare: Sleep elevated for the first night. Avoid pressing or massaging the lips. No strenuous exercise or alcohol for twenty-four hours. Cold compress (not direct ice) helps with day-of swelling.

Candidacy

Good candidates have a specific lip goal that involves visible volume increase — fuller body, better projection, more balanced upper-to-lower ratio — and want a result that lasts close to a year. Patients with a history of well-tolerated lip filler are typically excellent Ultra candidates.

Not a candidate if your goal is the most restrained, “did she or didn’t she” lip — Volbella is the appropriate choice. Not a candidate if you want a denser, more projecting result than Ultra alone provides — Ultra Plus is engineered for that. Not a candidate if you are pregnant or nursing or have active skin infection at the site.

If Ultra is not the right product for you, Dr. Brown will say which one is. The decision between Volbella, Ultra, and Ultra Plus is made in the consultation — same hand, same chair, no upsell.
